Stoney Creek is located on the shores of Lake Ontario. It is close to Hamilton and surrounds a part of the Niagara Escarpment. Stoney Creek became a city in 1984. It was merged with another township nearby known as Saltship Township. Stoney Creek was always an agricultural community. The communities forming a part of Stoney Creek are Elfrida, Tapleytown, Fruitland, Tweedside, Vinemount, and Winona. The population of Stoney Creek was 57, 327 in 2001.
The Battle of Stoney Creek monument is a local attraction of Stoney Creek. This battle was fought between American invaders and British-Canadian forces in 1812. The Erland Lee Museum is the site of the first women’s institute in the world. Fifty Point conservation area is another camping and harbour place. Stoney Creek has great innovation and business entrepreneurship from its early days. Stoney Creek has a population made up of Roman Catholic, Protestant, Chritian Orthodox, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and other religions. It has people of European, Italian, Croatian, Polish, Serbian, and Ukrainian origin. Battlefield House is preserved a memorial to the Battle of Stoney Creek. It has a museum, a monument and a park associated with it. The Devil’s Punch Bowl is another area of interest. It has a large illuminated cross in it and has appeared in some horror films for its locale. The Devil’s Punch Bowl offers a good view of both Stoney Creek as well as Hamilton.
The Winona Peach Festival is a festival offering homegrown fruits, crafts and music to visitors. Another festival, the Stoney Creek Flag Festival is held every summer. The Stoney Creek Dairy is on King’s Street and has icecreams and frozen desserts for all. Agriculture continues to be the major revenue earner in Stoney Creek. Stoney Creek has land prices lesser than regions around it. It is well developed for light industry, road transportation and commuting. One of the big characteristic feature of land available in Stoney Creek is its accessibility to the Greater Toronto Area and affordability. New land has been developed in the lakefront. Also, access to the western GTA by the Burlington Skyway is also available.
